Chapel of San Miguel Church - Toas, NM

This Chapel was destroyed at the start of the Pueblo Revolt. The Indians got tired of the "White Man" and got some revenge of their own. They burnt the church down with women and children inside.

Within the present structure, built in 1710 and much modified over the years, is a carved and painted altar screen installed in 1798. When the chapel was last restored, in 1955, excavators found shards of ancient Pueblo pottery under the floor. (this is taken from our tour book, "Sante Fe")

The following is what remains of the oldest part of the church and it is the chapel today.

The art in the church was very beautiful ... lots of Spanish/Mexican influences!

The following are the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph & the Christ Child.

This was particularly beautiful!!
The stained glass was exception in this chapel ... enjoy!

These two statues were also just lovely!
This isn't the second one ... this is the one from the 1600's. Of course she has been 'redressed'.
This is the second one that I thought was just lovely.
These holes were in the Altar floor ...
