This late-18th century church that has twice endured "remuddling." Originally a typical New Mexican adobe chapel, it was dressed up as a neo-Gothic New England church in the 1880's, then recostumed yet again as a drab California mission in 1922. But inside, where an astounding baroque altar screen depicts the Virgin of Guadalupe and a Holy Trinity of three identical men. The painted screen was signed Jose de Alzibar, 1783. (Information from our tour book, "Santa Fe".)
When we walked to this site, the church was closed. Then Carolyn went to the main doors and pressed on them. A gentleman answered and let us in, what a break..JPG)
