General Information Regarding Glacier National Park

Did you know...

* In order for a snow/ice pack to be qualified to be a glacier it must be:'
- 100' Deep in Ice
- Cover 25 Acres
- Have Movement

* 90% of the glaciers in the world will be gone by 2020.

* The mountains in Glacier have the oldest stone on the top and the youngest stone on the bottom. These mountains are made of sedimentary rock, unlike the Rockies that are granite. Geologist consider that the Lewis Thrust Fault as one of the classic geologic structures. The original position of the slab, before thrusting, was 65 to 100 kilometers to the west. The thrust occurred over millions of years, then erosion removed the younger stone leaving 1.6 billion year old stone on top of 70 million year old stone. Most mountain ranges in the world have the younger stone on top.
